Four years ago, a few folks suggested a need for a diocesan retreat house. With no money and no land, the idea was a pipe dream, but we kept an eye on the land market, and began discussions with the Yukon Territorial Government about the purchase of the Mary Lake 12 acre lease that the diocese has had for several years. Then the Takhini River property showed up and was purchased in October 2009. Preliminary concept drawings were produced and a pamphlet created to get the word out in the larger urban centers of the country where most of the financial assistance for the running of the diocese comes from. The campaign has begun and is in God’s hands.
Why? -A place to gather diocesan pastoral agents from the far flung regions of our vast diocese for retreats, workshops and prayer.
-A place for the Whitehorse Parishes and Schools to gather for retreat days.
-It would also serve the other Christian Churches in the North.
-A place for any individual seeking a time of prayer and quiet reflection.
What? A 14 room facility with two rooms for live in directors of the centre. A chapel; a cooking and eating place and a gathering area. And lots of outdoors which includes an active 4 acre garden.
The preliminary drawings give a 12,500 square foot building at $130-140 per sq./ft $1,500,000
How? PARTICIPATION
So far a handful of people have helped clearing a hydro rite of way and getting an out house put up, and planting the first crop of potatoes, which were harvested and given to the food bank. And one sponsor has contributed $25,000.
Sponsorship:
DIAMOND $65,000 (includes sponsoring and naming one of the 14 Guest rooms)
GOLD $25,000
SILVER $15,000
PATRON $10,000
FRIENDS $500
All and any monies contributed receives an income tax receipt.
